Shucking Oysters and Sniffing Corks (Or Looking for Pearls and Testing Wine) (From This Is Your Captain Speaking) So, while every idea needs to be treated with respect initially, really good ideas are like natural pearls. Thousands upon thousands of oysters may need to be cracked open before even one is found. This seems to be particularly true in the business world. Ever notice how those “great ideas” usually come from those with no money to back them? It’s the “idea man” who needs to buy his way into the deal with sweat equity because he hasn’t got the funds to make it fly. Ideas are like opinions; everybody has one and it’s going to make a million dollars. All it needs is someone who is not an “idea man” but has lots of cash. Do yourself a favor. When those great ideas come thundering your way, take time to examine the bottle in which they come, note the clarity of the contents, slowly uncork it, examine then sniff, the cork. If all looks as it should, take a small sip and swish it around in your mouth to develop the flavor. Only then should you consider drinking in earnest, and only slowly at that.
